Boston 2007 Timeline
Back to main
Gary Deters, Matt Jimmy Meyer, Troy TBone Wunderlich
and Dave Kalthoff traveled to Boston from Friday, September 28th to Sunday the 30th. Here is a timeline of their trip.
Friday 7:30pm - Flew out of MSP
Friday 11pm - After arriving in Boston and finally reaching the MidTown Hotel aka "The Middy" in the Copley area we walked a few
blocks to hang out @ a couple bars and have a few brews with Red Sox fans who were celebrating a division clinching win. We were bummed that the Twins couldn't have held
off the celebrations one more night so we could have witnessed it @ Fenway.
Saturday 7am - Our day started by heading via subway to Fenway to catch a tour of the ballpark. We arrived early to ensure we'd be part of the first tour group.
After confirming the tour start times with a guide we had some time to kill so we walked around the entire park to take in some of the sights. It was pretty
quiet around the park since I think most Sox fans were still sleeping one off.
The tour was unreal. The tour guide was great. He pointed out many things in the park that I'm sure some
true Red Sox fans don't even know about. For example, the hidden codes on the Green Monster and the Citgo "See It Go" Joe Carter story. We visited the press boxes,
went on the field by the Green Monster and then stood on top of it. Anyone who goes to Boston should certainly make an effort to take one.
Saturday 11am - After the Fenway tour, we hopped back on the subway and headed south to the Jamaica Plain neighborhood for a tour of the Sam Adams brewery.
Like the Fenway tour, the Sam Adams tour didn't disappoint. Although a bit detailed in the chemistry of mixing malts, hops, yeast and water to produce
some of the best tasting liquids on Earth, they did keep your attention by assuring you of the free samples afterwards. Oh yes, free samples of freshly brewed
Boston Lager, Octoberfest and an Imperial Pilsner. While consuming the samples we sat and chatted with fella who happened to be a life long Viking fan who lived in the Boston area.
It was fun to share in the highs and lows of Viking history.
Saturday 3pm - After having free beer at Sam Adams we thought we may as well head to Cheers. Although the layout inside is nothing like the TV show it does
have the steps that takes you down to the pub inside and it obviously has tons of Cheers memoribialia inside. We decided to have a nice meal since our next
stop would be Fenway Park.
Saturday 5pm - We arrived at Fenway in time to walk into the park as the gates opened. We were amazed at the amount of people who were there 2+ hours early so
they could take in the rounds of BP of both teams. Bostonians are passionate people.
As we walked to our section a guy that looked like current club GM, Theo Epstein, walked right past Jimmy and Dave. A Fenway worker confirmed the suspicion by congratulating him for the
clinching victory the previous night by saying "Congrats, Theo!".
Since we got into Fenway early, we were able to just watch BP and take in the atmosphere down the third baseline. Troy got a ball that was thrown into the stands by Lew Ford. Dets also got 2 balls, but he gave them to a couple kids.
Catching a night game at Fenway is certainly everything it we imagined it would be. We got to see the typical activities; Wakefield's knuckleball, a long Manny Rameriaz at bat and partook in the
traditional 8th inning "Sweet Caroline" song. The not so typical activity was the Red Sox fan who chatted it up with Jimmy at the game. By the end of the game
he told us that he was going to set us up for the night. We really didn't have plans other then to find a pub and have a few. This Red Sox fan ended up sending us
to Harvard Square to a bar called Tommy Doyels for beers on him.
Saturday 11pm - We stuck around after the game and watched the Fenway field crew @ work. We then headed out and ran into some other Twins fans. They had been to Fenway before and were familar with the area and they invited us to join them
for drinks. We were undecided on what to do. While walking down the sidewalk, we noticed some vendors that were selling t-shirts. Dets bought a Boston #5 Kevin Garnett shirt and the funniest shirt bought was the one that said "Jeter drinks wine coolers".
We knew the Havard Square trip would have risks but it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Anyone can go to Boston and get tickets to a game @ Fenway.
Not everyone gets the opportunity to be treated to a night on the town. So we took Jimmy's buddy, the Red Sox fan, up on his offer. We cabbed it and finally found the Havard Square bar called Tommy Doyle’s.
Sunday 2am - We had a great time drinking some more Sam Adams Ocktoberfest, talking sports and watching the Havard students come and go but it was closing time. We exited Tommy Doyle’s
and found a Cab to bring us back to the Middy. A great ending to a great day in Boston!
Sunday 8am - With just a few hours to kill in the morning we headed to downtown Boston to take in some of the sights. When we exited the subway we ran into a tour guide
who wanted us to ride on the duck boat tours. We told him we didn't have time and then asked him what we should see before we headed back to Fenway for the afternoon game. The Guide
told us to head down a certain street to the harbor and talked about certain sites along the way. He even walked us down a block to make sure we went in the right direction.
While walking and finding out we were from Minnesota and were heading to Fenway he of course wanted to talk sports. KG, Moss and David Ortiz are superstars that came from Minnesota so
at the moment Bostonians love Minnesotans. Looking back, this guy was very typical of the Boston people we interacted with. They were always willing to help us out all while giving their opinions on things especially sports.
Far different then NYC!
Sunday 11am - Dets grabbed a bite to eat @ a Dunkin Doughnuts while TBone, Dave and Jimmy waited for some seafood on the harbor. They ended up grabbing some grub @ the Salty Dog. Clam chowder was A+.
Sunday 12pm - Hopped back on the subway to head to Fenway. The subway cars were packed when heading to the park. Like the night before, everyone gets to Fenway early.
Sunday 12:30pm - Arrived at Fenway and entered our gate in center field. On the way in Dets and Dave noticed a security guard that looked curiously similar to a dork on the plane who
was constantly walking around yapping with people and then lost his cellphone. He was a tool. Dets went up to the guy and asked him if he was just on a plane and had lost his cellphone. He
pretended not to remember the incident but IT WAS HIM. What a tool!
Sunday 1:45pm - Settled into our seats in right field. There was a family behind us and the Dad noticed the Twins gear and started asking us questions about our trip. His son, we think his name was Everett since
his Dad called him "Mount Everett", was about 13 and grossly overweight. We don't know how he fit in his seat muchless how he walked up the stairs to get up to it. While we talked to his Dad, the kid asked Dets in a high pitched voice,
"Hey mister, do you want some candy corn?". To our amazment, Dets' sugar tooth was to overpowering and he accepted the offer. Mount Evertt dug his grubby paws into the family size corn candy bag and gave
Dets a handful.
Sunday 2:30pm - Mount Everett was hungry so Dad had to go get him some food. When the Dad was midway down our section's steps and heading towards the exit, Mount Everett proceeded to yell in a high squeel,
"DAD! DAD!" trying to get his Dad's attention to make sure he gets him a soda. After a night of boozing the sound pierced our ears and cause an instant migrane. Later on Dad came walking back up with
huge buckets of fries and Everett starting squeeling again, "Dad! Dad! Did you get me Ketchup? I wanted Ketchup!"
Sunday 4:30pm - Unfortunaly, we had to head out before the game ended to ensure that we made our flight. The baseball wasn't the greatest considering it was the
last day of the regular season and meaningless for both teams. We hoped on the subway and headed to the Middy to grab our bags, checkout and catch a cab to the airport.
Sunday 6pm - Arrived at our gate all while running into our Twins fans we had seen at the game.
Sunday 8pm - Arrived in Detroit for a layover before catching a flight back to MSP. We were still talking about the kid that was sitting behind and laughing about the whole incident.
Sunday 11:30pm - Arrive @ MSP
